Mafia Island holds a unique blend of earthy grounding, oceanic serenity, and deep spiritual clarity. Rooted in Tanzania's ancestral frequency and the gentle rhythm of traditional Swahili culture, its quiet remoteness creates the perfect environment for emotional release, deep meditation, and intuitive reconnection. Breathe deeply, move softly, and allow the ocean to bring you home.

The largest fish in the ocean has no interest in you. That is the first thing that undoes people.
A whale shark is vast beyond anything you have shared water with, and feeds on plankton so small you cannot see it. There is no threat here, and nothing to brace against. Just an animal moving through open water with total, unhurried trust, entirely at home in its own rhythm.
Swimming beside one is often described as entering a temple. Time slows. Your breathing drops. Your nervous system, which has spent years scanning for the next thing, finds nothing to scan for and finally lets go.
Whale sharks carry an energy that is expansive and grounding at once. They open the heart while keeping you anchored in your body. They move through the vastness with effortless trust, and simply being near them teaches surrender: how to stop resisting, stop forcing, and follow your own natural rhythm instead of somebody else's.
You cannot chase this experience. You cannot make it happen faster. The ocean gives it when it gives it, and learning to wait with an open heart is half of what the week teaches.
Peace that is not fragile.
Most retreats give you a good week. This one will change how you move through the ones that follow. You will leave Mafia Island slower, quieter, and more certain of what actually matters.
Five mornings on the ocean. You will travel by boat across turquoise water, and we move with patience, waiting until we find whale sharks it is ethically safe to swim with and every conservation requirement is met. Only then does anyone enter the water.
Whale sharks are the largest fish on the planet and pose no danger to humans. They feed only on plankton and small fish, and move with an extraordinary calmness. Being close to one is grounding and humbling rather than frightening.
You are never left out there. The boat stays close throughout, so you can rest, climb out, watch their speckled backs glide past from above, and get back in whenever you feel ready. Watching from the deck all morning is a completely valid way to experience this.
Respectful distance at all times, never touching the animals, and entering the water only when conditions are right for both you and the sharks. Our local guides have worked these waters for years and every encounter is on the whale shark's terms.
Timing shifts with sightings and sea conditions. Some mornings are slow and meditative, others hold several encounters. Every outing has its own character.

Most guests do. People arrive alone and leave with friendships that outlast the week, because a small group in a remote place with no distractions builds closeness fast. By the second morning on the boat, nobody is a stranger.
Shared sea view rooms are matched with another solo guest, and single occupancy is available if you'd rather have your own space. Everyone joins a WhatsApp group before we travel, so the names are already familiar by the time you land.
Yoga teacher, breathwork facilitator, author and retreat creator. An ocean baby who feels most at home in the water, Maja has swum with dolphins countless times and shared the ocean with whale sharks, experiences that shaped every retreat she now leads.
Her own path began somewhere harder. She moved through depression, anxiety and self-doubt in her youth, and found her way back through yoga, breathwork and honest inner work, rebuilding her life in alignment with her truth.
That is what she brings to the mat. Her work is to remind you that you are the author of your own life, capable of rewriting the story, holding both shadow and light, and stepping fully into who you were always meant to be. A mermaid at heart, she carries the fluid, intuitive rhythm of the ocean into everything she teaches.
Karin weaves Yin Yoga, somatic and intuitive movement, sound journeys and energy alignment into spaces where people can soften and return to stillness. Her sessions ask very little of you: long-held postures, movement that follows the body's own impulse rather than an instruction, and sound that lets the nervous system unwind on its own.
The ocean has been her greatest teacher, the place where she feels most spacious and most attuned to life. In 2024 she hosted her own yoga retreat in Zanzibar. In 2025 she came to Egypt as a guest on Maja's dolphin retreat, and it moved her so profoundly that she is here now as co-host.
A lover of silence, she finds as much in quiet introspection as she does in sharing transformation with others. Her path has been shaped by exploration, resilience and a longing to live in alignment with her truth. After a morning at sea, hers is the work that lets everything settle into something you can carry home.
Most guests are first-timers. There is nothing to prepare, no experience required, and no expectation that you arrive as anything other than yourself.
Yes. You'll be in a life jacket or with a float if you'd like one, guides are in the water with you, and the boat stays close. You can watch from the deck any morning you prefer.
December falls in the heart of the season, when the plankton blooms bring them to these waters, and sightings are common. They are wild animals though, and no one can promise a specific encounter. What we can promise is five mornings of looking, with guides who know exactly where and how.
